The aim of this paper is to explore how a number of processes combined to create the micro-level strategies and procedures that resulted in the deadliest and most tragic forest fire in Portuguese history. The article shows how the collapse of the structure led to teams using only local information, which led to acts of improvisational myopia, in the particular form of corrosive myopia, and how a form of incidental improvisation led to catastrophic results. The research offers insight into the dangers of improvisation arising from corrosive myopia, identifying ways to minimise them with the development of improvisational practices that allow for the creation of new patterns of action.
