Professional codes are a set of rules in the workplace. Two categories of codes are universal: civility and responsibility. Three categories are specific to the employer and the position: etiquette, hierarchical codes, and values. Hierarchical codes take the form of four dimensions: distance, autonomy, evaluation, and direct or indirect communication. Discrepancies between personal preferences and local requirements determine the risk and effort of integration. The adoption of these codes warrants vigilance from companies and awareness-raising among students, as two-thirds of young people experience culture shock in their first job.
