The term “GAFAM” refers today to the five largest North American companies that largely dominate and control the digital market, including artificial intelligence: Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft.
Originally, the acronym “GAFA” referred to Google, Apple, Facebook, and Amazon, with the “M” for Microsoft added later. GAFAM are often called the “Big Five” due to their power and influence, sometimes compared to the five most iconic wild animal species.
These companies, largely originating from Silicon Valley, compete with another group known as NATU: Netflix, Airbnb, Tesla, and Uber.
