Focused on the Greek economic crisis, one of the toughest and the most prolonged ones on a global scale, the present research centers on both anthropocentric and business-centric factors that helped SMEs survive, thus, providing a valuable survival manual. Grounded in quantitative research the paper includes two studies. 250 SMEs were included in the first study while 189 of them that survived, participated in the second study.

In an attempt to explain the ‘education-job mismatch’, this study sets out to ascertain the “skill set” that is needed by modern-day graduates who are pursuing a career in an international environment. The emphasis is on identifying the particular skills that they will need, with specific reference to Cross-Cultural Management or ‘CCM skills’. Using a mixed methods approach (focus group discussions, interviews and interactive seminar); the findings expose the magnitude of the education–job mismatch. Specifically, there is a lack of transferable CCM skills, a mismatch between the provision of CCM skills development in higher education and the needs of recruiters, and a curriculum shortfall in terms of CCM skills. Based on the findings, a framework is developed for addressing the ‘education-job mismatch’.

Consumers in Western markets are increasingly critical towards globalization and re-embrace local values. Companies thus must decide whether to continue to pursue global branding strategies and/or rejuvenate local branding strategies. To explore the implications of market globalization for consumer preferences, we use signaling theory to investigate the role of perceived brand globalness and localness as signals of brand credibility, related downstream effects and boundary conditions, across two countries with differing levels of globalization. In globalized markets, brand globalness is a weaker signal of brand credibility than brand localness, whereas in globalizing markets, the two signals are of equal importance.

As COVID-19 has spread across the world it has had major impacts on supply chains. It is reasonable to assume that the impact on trade flows may be even greater than that for the GFC in 2009, where world trade fell by over 20%. Most of this is an entirely natural result of the closure of many production structures around the world. However, some trade impacts are the direct result of trade policy interventions by governments, which presage a more major and long-term impact from the current crisis.

Building on market-orientation theory, this research centers on the market-driving strategy and the key attributes that top and middle-level management should have in order to facilitate and perform such a strategy. Findings from an exploratory study including in-depth interviews with 27 experts, seven academicians and 20 experienced practitioners working in market-driving companies across an array of sectors, show that there is a number of common as well as unique attributes that each one of these two managerial groups should have so as to perform a market-driving strategy. Given that this is the first research to explore personnel attributes as a key antecedent of the application of a market-driving strategy, the present research results in an extensive number of academic research propositions as well as relevant managerial implications for the business community.

Professor Christian Linder and his co-authors examined the question of sufficient (or insufficient) starting conditions enabling a pathway to survival, which is critical in entrepreneurship. Their results published in Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice show that combinations of one’s managerial experience and social support are related to survival, while over-reliance on financial capital is not.
